DLP at Harvard-Westlake: Presentation by Romy Harari

Romy Harari Shares Labkovski’s Artwork to Honor Yom HaShoah at Harvard-Westlake Middle School

The Harvard-Westlake Middle School community honored Yom HaShoah at morning assembly with a special viewing of art from the David Labkovski Project.

Thank you Romy Harari, DLP’s 2023 Ellie Lainer Youth Leadership Award Recipient & Harvard-Westlake Class of ’26, for her work in bringing the art collection to Harvard-Westlake Middle School. Using Labkovski’s art, Romy shared lessons of life, survival, tolerance, acceptance, and the importance of bearing witness to history with her peers at this special viewing.

Romy is a student docent with the David Labkovski Project, and has truly been a leader in sharing this important history with the world.

A special thank you to Gabby Vanderlaan, DLP Legacy of Hope Award recipient 2018, who shared her DLP journey with students at Harvard-Westlake.

“I think art is always a nice way to present ideas – especially difficult ideas,” Benami said. “In addition to that, I did want people to have a little taste – if they haven’t been educated [about the Holocaust] before – about exactly what happened.”

“I thought it was so cool how you could see and learn about the Holocaust through a different view through art, and the paintings are beautiful. What I learned through the process that I think is so meaningful – and that everyone got to see at the assembly – is that each painting shared a different message of David’s story and his life through the Holocaust. We can all learn about the Holocaust through each painting like a puzzle piece, and put them all together to make a story.”
