David Labkovski Project Exhibits

Curated online galleries & in-person exhibit information

Our virtual online exhibits provide general audiences access to David Labkovski’s artwork, allowing them to step into the art through interactive digital content. Each exhibit has a special story to tell and encourages the audience to consider the lessons Labkovski can teach us for the future. The online exhibits can be entered through the links below.

Curators of our exhibits include DLP Board Members, winners of our Ellie Lainer Youth Hope Awards, and Student Docent Training Program participants. If a piece in one of our galleries speaks to you, we hope you’ll consider submitting your thoughts to our Reflect & Respond Program, which is open to all ages. If you’re a student interested in participating in a DLP program, please visit our Programs page!

Is your school, museum, or organization interested in educating people about the Holocaust and engaging in meaningful dialogue about what it means to bear witness to history? David Labkovski Project exhibits were curated with the intention to empower audiences to think critically about art, history, and what the past can teach us about the future. Whether you want a full art exhibit, a virtual reality gallery, or a guest lecture, we will work to curate a powerful and unique experience focused on Holocaust education.

Documenting History through Art

A narrative artist, David Labkovski (1906-1991) examined his experiences of World War II, the Holocaust and their aftermath in autobiographical drawings and paintings. Grounded in memory, his work is a visual diary in oil, gouache, charcoal and pen drawings, offering glimpses of the thriving Jewish community in Vilna (or current-day Vilnius, Lithuania), of what he endured in a Soviet forced-labor camp, of the looting and destruction of Vilna, and of his search for peace and renewal. Generously loaned from private collections.

Recalling a Lost World: Sholem Aleichem & David Labkovski

David Labkovski brought Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem’s stories to life through his art. Aleichem’s stories shed light on the everyday life of the Eastern European Jewish community. Reading and illustrating these tales brought Labkovski closer to the people and stories of his childhood. In commemorating the “world that was,” Labkovski recalled how Jewish people lived, instead of focusing on how they died.

A Step into the Past. A Leap into the Future.

DLP and Virtual Reality Experiences

The David Labkovski Project has curated a virtual reality (VR) exhibit that transforms two of Labkovski’s paintings into an immersive experience. This VR exhibit uses the Oculus, and allows participants to “step into” the village in Vilna as Labkovski remembers it in his early life. Through virtual immersion in the paintings, participants gain a greater understanding of the vastness of Jewish life that existed for centuries before the Holocaust.

The 15-minute VR experience is enjoyed by people of all ages! DLP  provides one VR set-up and someone on staff to answer questions and oversee the experience. For additional systems, the hosting organization will need to have a game-capable computer and the Oculus game hardware.
