Students educate their peers about the Holocaust at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in San Diego.
CBS8 Interviewed DLP Student Ambassador Rebecca Leeman about her work with David Labkovski Project (DLP) and co-curating the exhibit “Documenting History through Art” at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in San Diego. She spoke passionately about her work, the importance of DLP’s mission, and the impact this exhibit has had on visitors.
Students from Torah High School and Madera County who completed DLP’s Student Docent & Leadership Program also guided guests through the exhibit, which was open to the public until May 14, 2024. Guests experienced a remarkable journey through Labkovski’s extraordinary artwork as their knowledgeable guides shared insights, stories, and interpretations, offering a unique perspective on Labkovski’s life and legacy.
“The events of October 7th tragically demonstrate how the brutal mass murder of Jews is not just something of the past, and shows that antisemitism is still very widespread. And stemming from that, Holocaust denialism has been exacerbated. I really want this exhibit to be a place where people can come and learn about David Labkovski’s story and the lessons we learn from this history. Using the medium of art creates a lasting and impactful impression. This is furthered by interacting with the docents.
People are not only visiting the exhibit, they’re viewing the artwork and engaging with student docents who ask probing questions about what they see. Together this creates an unforgettable and very meaningful experience that sheds light on critical history and the struggle of the Jewish people.”
